Spam Fighting Tips
The
following steps will probably not eliminate all spam, but they will help
reduce the amount.
Never
Reply To Spam
To visit
the website or buy the product of a spammer is to encourage the practice
and to reward them for being pest.
Never
Reply to their invitation to removed from the mailing list
It
usually says that to be removed from the mailing list you should reply
to the email with the word remove in the subject box. Do this and you
will receive more spam. Many spammers just send out blanket mailings
hoping that the address belongs to someone. If you reply they know they
have an actual email address and you will be added to more list.
Do
not send an irate reply to the sender
Spam is
often routed through the email addresses of innocent people and they
don’t need the hassle. Also, even if the reply reaches the spammer all
you did is inform him that yours is an active email address. He really
doesn’t care that you are unhappy
Obtain
an alternate email address.
An
alternate email address will not eliminate spam but it will keep it out
of your primary email program. You can obtain an alternate email address
from Yahoo or Hotmail or one of the other web based email accounts on
the internet. Use this address when ever you register for anything on
the web or participate in User groups or Newsgroups. In fact use it
anywhere when dealing with people or companies you are not familiar
with.
Use
your alternate email address when filling out entry forms
or
other advertising type material that you fill out even when not on the
computer. For instances, in cases where you buy from a mail order house.
Avoid
signing
guest books on websites
Spammers
seem to find these guest books and add all the signers to their list. If
you feel you must sign one use your alternate email address.
Be
very careful of who you give your real email address to:
Of
course give it to friends, individuals and business people that you trust. Just be
wary
of giving it to businesses that you don’t know. There have been many
cases of companies promising not to reveal email address or to sell
their email list, but do so despite the promises.
